Wow! I have not logged in for quite a while and I am now doing this from Bangkok. I was told by my Thai friend that there’s lots of interesting cafes waiting for me to write about here. I certainly hope that I will have time to do so. I have been very busy getting ready for the trip and so I have neglected all my readers for a long while. I am so sorry about this.
This is a cafe that I have visited quite some time ago. We had a little retreat there and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise find. Joan Bowen is not new to some and it is famous for employing people who are mentally challenged so that they can earn a living for themselves as well. I really like this spirit of social enterprise. When you entered Joan Bowen, it will give you a cottage style feel. Oh yah, and I feel that I am entering a very nice, cosy , swiss cottage home. Usually you won’t see a big crowd here but that doesn’t mean that they are not good. Joan Bowen is acclaimed for their fish and chips and I must say that this acclamation is not in vain. The fish is fresh and the portion is really huge. Another dish that you should try is the ribs. The meat is very tender and the BBQ sauce is really good.
I didn’t think too much about the coffee there. I would think of Joan Bowen as a restaurant first rather than a cafe. Interestingly, they serve very good coffee. They are not your usual kind of latte or cappuccino, just very normal coffee but the coffee is fragrant and it really awakens the soul. Most of us ordered the coffee and I must say that it feels good when the whole room is filled with the aromatic scent of coffee.
Joan Bowen is one place you certainly need to pay a visit. Good food, great coffee and a good cause for social enterprise…what else to ask for?
